What Is Hypersexuality And How Will You Recognize It?

What is hypersexuality and how will you recognize it?

Hypersexuality is also known as a compulsive sexual behaviour disorder, or more commonly as Athens Escorts can confirm, a sex addiction. When a person is obsessed with sex, sexual acts and sexual fantasies, he can be hypersexual.
It is a disorder so severe that it can disrupt a person’s daily functioning. Some research even shows that 3% to 6% of people live with some form of sexual addiction disorder and that this disorder may mainly affect men.

People with hypersexuality can exhibit a range of problematic sexual behaviours, such as excessive and constant monitoring of pornographic content, excessive masturbation, or sexual activity with large numbers of partners. The lack of recognition of hypersexuality as a mental disorder until recently has resulted in many people living with the condition without knowing exactly their condition and diagnosis.

What are the characteristics of hypersexuality?

Hypersexuality is expressed differently in each person who has this disorder. While one person may have difficulty controlling their sexual fantasies, another may not be able to contain the urge to have certain sexual impulses, such as masturbation.

Some of the most common characteristics of hypersexuals:

  • forced masturbation
  • excessive use of pornographic material
  • sexual intercourse with consenting adults
  • internet sex
  • telephone sex
  • visits to brothels, strip clubs, etc. .

The effects of hypersexuality are often unbearable. Family break-up, social isolation, dismissal from work, financial ruin and any legal issues that may arise fall within the scope of these consequences.

How can one understand that he is addicted to sex?

There has been some controversy in the past about recognizing hypersexuality as a mental disorder. According to some experts, this condition does not exist and is not recognized until today.

Identifying hypersexuality can be difficult, as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), which provides diagnosis for various mental health conditions, does not provide criteria for diagnosing hypersexuality or forced sexual behaviour.

Some mental health professionals, however, use diagnostic criteria for conditions such as sexual addiction to help diagnose hypersexuality. This is because hypersexuality could be considered a form of addiction or impulse control disorder.

Many people with hypersexuality report that they feel a deep sense of shame or embarrassment. As with any mental condition, proper treatment and coping strategies can help the person with the disorder gain control of the condition and begin treatment. If you think you are suffering from this disorder, you should first consult a specialist for a correct diagnosis and then you should remember that there is no reason to feel ashamed or embarrassed about this addiction.

The criteria that were proposed as diagnostic for the introduction of hypersexuality in the 5th Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, stated that:

For at least 6 months there should be a repetitive, non-paraphilic, intense preoccupation of the person with sexual fantasies, urges and behaviours associated with four or more of the following:

  1. Excessive consumption of time with sexual fantasies, urges and behaviours and in planning or engaging in these behaviours.
  2. Repeated engagement in behaviour in response to situations of discomfort such as: anxiety, depressive thinking, irritability and boredom.
  3. Repeated engagement in behaviour in response to stressful events.
  4. Repeated unsuccessful attempts to control or reduce the above behaviours.
  5. Ignoring the risk of physical and emotional harm to oneself or others.

The above symptoms should cause clinically significant discomfort to the individual and damage to social, occupational or other important areas of functionality related to the frequency and intensity of these sexual fantasies and urges and behaviours.

These sexual fantasies, urges and behaviours should not appear as a direct psychological effect of substances, drugs, medical condition or episode of mania. The person must be at least 18 years old.

The treatment of hypersexuality

As psychological methods of treatment for hypersexual behaviour have been proposed:

  • the psychodynamic approaches
  • cognitive behavioural approaches
  • group therapies
  • family therapy
  • couple therapy
  • the treatment of the 12 steps of detoxification
  • The drug treatment is individualized and evaluated based on the clinical picture of the symptoms, the age of the patient, the time history, the empathy but also the cooperation with the therapist.
